Chernobyl

The 25th Anniversary of the biggest man-made disaster to affect human beings apart from wars.

Belarus is a wonderful country to visit for its rich history, its beautiful forests and wildlife, its wonderful people - despite their sufferings throughout much of their history .

We should not be be discouraged from visiting because of possible radiation because of the fallout from the disaster at  Chernobyl.

The next film was taken at the cancer hospital outside Minsk where some of the patients are being cared for.  The hospital was given by the Austrian government to the people of Belarus for over 1000 patients at a time.

A very large part of Belarus was contaminated as can be seen on the map too the left.

After the disaster the wind unfortunately blew towards Belarus and laid waste large areas that are still contaminated to this day - 25 years later.

Hundreds of villages and ten of thousands of people had to be evacuated and some have returned.

The world Health Organisation made the statement that only 60 people died as a direst result of accident.  The Ukraine government talks of thousands and the argument goes on.

The films attached to this map are film I took in the red zone above Chernobyl on the map.  We were taken to this pig farm and the village to see the devastation.
